Adult Education |
||
Over the years The Villagers have championed education as an ongoing program. Our efforts have included bringing nationally known speakers from Washington D.C. in addition to the local experts who have shared their knowledge with us.
The Villagers have partnered with other organizations as well to capitalize on their resources and experience. One notable program was our partnership with the Historic Home Owners Association of Coral Gables in bringing Rustin Levinson, an internationally known objects curator and restorer, who spoke about the challenge in restoring the 19th Century Tiffany Chapel, now installed at the Morse Museum in Winter Park, Florida. The Villagers have donated their services to worthwhile preservation projects in Miami-Dade County, including the state-funded survey of Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove. Local experts instructed Villager members on the process and research necessary for completing the survey. Other examples of support of public awareness include sponsorship of the “Historic Schools Conference” produced by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 2004, and a lecture on Miami Modernism presented at the Florida Trust Conference held in Delray Beach in May,
2004. |

Youth Education |
||
To
educate resident young people about the value of historic preservation,
the Villagers run an outreach program for the Miami area's public and
private schools.
Individual Villager members visit classrooms with a hands-on suitcase exhibit. The suitcase includes games such as Miamiopoly, examples of architectural items, videos, contact numbers for resource speakers, lesson plans and curriculum guides on local history. The Villagers also funded the printing and distribution of the Heritage Activity Book, a joint project with Dade Heritage Trust, for the area elementary schools. Individual Villagers present an introductory lesson from the book in the classroom. Recently, the Villagers have partnered with DASH (Design and
Architecture Senior High), a public school magnet program for outstanding
students in these fields. The Villagers provide scholarships for talented
and needy high school students planning to study design, architecture, or
some form of historic preservation, and DASH students work with the
Villagers on various projects requiring art, design and/or architecture to
produce calendars, stationery, photography of historic projects and
various field activities.
